PCRC held a conference entitled “Picturing Moral Courage: Stories of Survival” in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on 14-16 July 2011. The conference was organized by PCRC Founder and Executive Director Velma Šarić and Co-founder and Project Director Leslie Woodward in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States in BiH and PROOF: Media for Social Justice. Its aim was to educate youth, civil society participants, and representatives from the international community about the topics of moral courage and rescuer behavior and their importance in attaining sustainable peace in post-conflict settings.

Utilizing various forms of media and communication — from panel discussions and personal narratives, to photography exhibitions and film — the weekend not only highlighted the heroic actions of those who acted on behalf of others in times of danger, but also the important role that youth can have in the dissemination of such important stories using the tools of media. Comprised of a wide range of educators, photographers, filmmakers, and students from across BiH, the greater Balkans region, and the world, the conference was a great success.

The diversity of student participants is highly notable. From within BiH, there were students from Sarajevo, Tuzla, Mostar, Bihać, Visoko, Kiseljak, Vareš, Bjeljina, Brčko, Banja Luka, Pale, Zvornik, Trebinje, Bosanska Gradiška, and Banovići. Regional students attended from Prilep, Macedonia, Belgrade, Serbia, Tirana, Albania, Zagreb, Croatia, Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, and international students were present from the USA, Scotland, England, Finland, Portugal, Tunisia, China, Rwanda, Denmark, Brunei Darussalam, Germany, and Greece.
