For the fourth year in a row, the “State of Peace” Youth Academy, a European Union in BiH programme run in cooperation with the Post-Conflict Research Center, brought together 45 young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia. Over a two-week journey, participants visited seven local communities: Sarajevo, East Sarajevo, Tuzla, Brčko, Bijeljina, Travnik and Vitez. Through conversations with representatives of international and non-governmental organisations, workshops, and study visits to museums, memorial sites and monuments, they learned about the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding and peacebuilding in the region. They paid their respects to victims, spoke with regional experts on dealing with the past, and reflected on what a more peaceful and stable future for the Western Balkans could look like. Along the way, they built friendships with peers from neighbouring countries, and the empathy and awareness of reconciliation they gained are among the Academy’s most lasting results.
